Distribution Moat
How do I know if my business actually has a Distribution Moat?+
Ask yourself what would happen if you stopped running paid ads tomorrow. Would customers still discover you through your audience, community, partnerships, referrals, organic search, or brand reputation? A real Distribution Moat gives you repeatable access to customers that competitors can’t simply copy by increasing their ad budget.
Can a strong social media following be a Distribution Moat?+
Yes—but follower count alone isn’t enough. A Distribution Moat exists when you have an audience you can consistently reach, engage, and turn into customers. An active community, newsletter, creator network, or loyal social following can become a moat when competitors would struggle to recreate the same relationship and reach.
If competitors can copy my product, how can I still protect my advantage?+
Build something harder to copy: your distribution. Competitors may replicate features, pricing, or even your messaging, but recreating years of audience trust, partnerships, community, organic visibility, and brand recognition is much harder. That’s why distribution can become more defensible than the product itself.
Does relying heavily on paid ads mean I don’t have a Distribution Moat?+
Not necessarily, but paid media alone is rarely a strong moat because competitors can bid for the same audiences. The advantage becomes more defensible when paid acquisition works alongside channels you own or have uniquely built—such as an email list, community, partnerships, referrals, brand demand, or strong organic reach.
